Background of the Study

Infection control measures are crucial in healthcare settings to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases among patients, healthcare workers, and the general public. Nurses play a vital role in ensuring the effective implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, sterilization techniques, and adherence to standard precautions. Globally, hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-resource settings (Adeyemi et al., 2023). In Nigeria, the burden of HAIs is compounded by factors such as inadequate IPC training, limited resources, and inconsistent adherence to infection control protocols (Usman et al., 2024).

Kebbi State, located in northwestern Nigeria, faces challenges in infection control due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure, understaffed facilities, and limited access to essential IPC supplies. While national guidelines for infection prevention exist, the level of adherence among nurses in Kebbi State remains underexplored. Understanding the extent to which nurses implement infection control measures is critical for improving patient safety and reducing the spread of infections in healthcare settings.

This study seeks to evaluate the implementation of infection control measures by nurses in Kebbi State, assessing the extent of compliance, barriers to adherence, and potential strategies for improvement. Given the critical role nurses play in infection prevention, identifying gaps in implementation and addressing challenges will contribute to strengthening IPC practices in healthcare facilities.

Statement of the Problem

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a major challenge in Nigerian healthcare facilities, often resulting in prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and higher mortality rates. In Kebbi State, the effectiveness of infection control practices by nurses is not well documented, making it difficult to assess the level of compliance and the factors influencing adherence to IPC guidelines. Studies have shown that inadequate IPC training, lack of resources, and poor supervision contribute to low compliance rates among healthcare workers (Ibrahim et al., 2023).

Nurses, as frontline caregivers, are responsible for maintaining hygiene standards and implementing infection control measures. However, issues such as poor staff-to-patient ratios, inadequate PPE, and lack of enforcement of IPC protocols may hinder effective implementation. If these challenges are not addressed, the risk of HAIs will remain high, jeopardizing patient safety and the overall quality of healthcare services in Kebbi State. This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap by examining the extent of infection control implementation among nurses and identifying key barriers that need to be addressed.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of compliance with infection control measures among nurses in Kebbi State.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in implementing infection prevention and control measures.
  3. To evaluate the impact of infection control training on nurses’ adherence to IPC protocols.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of compliance with infection control measures among nurses in Kebbi State?
  2. What are the challenges affecting the implementation of infection control measures by nurses?
  3. How does infection control training influence nurses’ adherence to IPC guidelines?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Kebbi State have a high level of compliance with infection control measures.
  2. There are significant challenges affecting the implementation of infection control measures by nurses.
  3. Infection control training has a positive impact on nurses’ adherence to IPC guidelines.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nurses working in healthcare facilities in Kebbi State, examining their implementation of infection control measures. The research will include nurses from both public and private hospitals to provide a comprehensive analysis. However, the study may be limited by factors such as availability of data, willingness of nurses to participate, and variations in hospital policies. Additionally, the findings may not be generalizable to other states with different healthcare infrastructures.

Definitions of Terms

  • Infection Control Measures: Standard practices implemented to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in healthcare settings.
  • Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs): Infections acquired in hospitals or other healthcare facilities due to inadequate infection control practices.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Equipment used by healthcare workers to protect themselves and patients from infectious agents, including gloves, masks, and gowns.
  • Adherence: The extent to which healthcare workers follow recommended infection control guidelines.
